The Armenian Community of Cyprus has launched a campaign for the urgent conservation and renovation of Sourp Magar Monastery, the only surviving Armenian monastic complex in the Eastern Mediterranean region, and a monument of outstanding cultural significance in Cyprus.  

For centuries, this sacred site stood as a place of pilgrimage, spirituality, and cultural continuity. Since its forced abandonment in 1974, the monastery has been exposed to earthquakes, vandalism, and weathering. Today, sections of the complex are at risk of irreversible collapse.
Founded in the 11th century and flourishing as an Armenian spiritual centre from the 15th century onwards, Sourp Magar is a rare synthesis of Armenian, Byzantine, and Gothic architectural traditions. Its loss would be a permanent impoverishment of Cyprus’s cultural heritage.
